Since 1972, CLCV has worked to protect the environmental quality of the state by increasing public awareness of environmental issues and, consequently, growing the number of Californians who are environmental voters. In this way, we can elect environmentally responsible candidates and hold them accountable once in office. It is with this mission in mind that we annually select outstanding organizations to honor.
In 2018 that honor goes to Black Women for Wellness.
BWW is a public health and reproductive justice organization in LA focused on the well-being of black women and girls. Founded in 1997, they strive to educate and advocate for underserved black communities about key issues impacting their health, which include environmental and environmental justice issues like removing toxic chemicals in beauty products, mitigating the harms of urban oil drilling, and access to healthy food.
Recognizing that black communities tend to be underserved, BWW has worked to give their members and the black women’s community a stronger and louder voice. From their monthly [email protected] forums that connect key community leaders with African American women to conducting focus groups on the values and attitudes of black women, BWW has had their finger firmly on the pulse of the community.
They diligently strive to understand the needs and values of such a vital yet too often neglected constituency, and then turn that knowledge into power advocacy on their behalf. This year, BWW’s leadership resulted in them passing AB 2775 (Kalra), a landmark first of its kind law to require professional cosmetics to disclose their ingredients. This law will help protect hairdressers, manicurists, and salon workers from the toxic chemicals that they’re exposed to every day –and encourage the beauty industry to find safer alternatives.
CLCV has been fortunate enough to learn from and have built a strong partnership with such an amazing organization.
